HOW THE H.F.A. SCHOLARSHIP BEGAN

For a number of years Hathaway Family Association Board Member, the late Dr. Jerry L. Hathaway, felt very strongly about establishing an H.F.A. Scholarship program.

In 2011 his dream became a reality. Jerry had experience with his alma mater college’s scholarship committee and brought that knowledge to us. His dream was to help our young Hathaway descendants in some small way, be it help towards tuition or the purchase of expensive college textbooks. In 2011 Jerry served as chairman of the newly formed committee that included board members Edwin Roy Hathaway and Ruth E. Hathaway. The committee individually evaluated the applications received, each using their own system. When the scores were compared, the committee all agreed. Three scholarships were presented that year.

Since 2011, thirty-five scholarships have been presented amounting to $30,050. When donations total at least $1000 in memory of an individual, a “Named Scholarship” is presented. We consider this quite an accomplishment for our relatively small organization. The Board of H.F.A. has helped to guide the program.

An applicant must be a member of H.F.A. or a child, grandchild or great grandchild of a current member of H.F.A. in the Hathaway genealogy line. An applicant must be enrolled and attending a four year college or enrolled in a community college with intent to transfer to a degree program.

Jerry’s dream lives on as new scholarships are awarded each year. Carol L. Hathaway, Jerry’s widow, now serves as the committee chair.

Donations to the Scholarship Fund may be made at any time and if appropriate, may be made in honor of or in memory of someone special.

Donations should be made payable to the Hathaway Family Association and sent to: Ruth E. Hathaway, Treasurer, 2231 Riverside Avenue, Somerset, MA 02726.
