The Hathaway Family Association voted on June 1, 1968 to have the Richmond Herald, College of Arms, London research the coat of arms which we know has been in use for approximately three centuries in our families.
The official report is dated 7 Aug. 1968. “Neither the arms nor the crest is in the Official Ordinary of Arms and hence must be regarded as either spurious or wrongly attributed. However, Hathaway arms were quartered in 1732 for Anne, eldest daughter and coheir of Rev. John Hathway, late Prebend of Hereford, but with no indication of how he established his right to the arms. The only other record is in a 16th century alphabet of arms (College of Arms ms. 2nd L. 2. fo xii r) where they are simply entered for Hathaway.”
At the annual meeting of the Hathaway Family Association on June 7, 1969, it was voted to use the hunter’s horn on black shield together with crest “A demi-lion rampant, gules In his dexter paw a fleur de lys” quoted from Book of Family Crests Henry Washburn, 10th edition, London Bell & Daldy, 186 Fleet St., 1862. Mrs. Jane Hathaway Joeck offered to prepare a line-drawing suitable for use in the revised edition.
